Cooking Oil & Grease

Hazardous Waste Trash

Household Disposal
Small amounts of solid grease and leftover oil that has cooled down can be placed in the trash. Enclose these small amounts in a container that is not recyclable (like sealable food pouch or a mixed material coffee canister). Large amounts, such as oil used in turkey fryers, need to be dropped off at a Household Hazardous Waste Facility.

Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Drop-Off
Your city or county may offer HHW drop-off sites and collection events.
– Los Angeles County: S.A.F.E. Collection Centers and events
– Riverside County
San Bernardino County
– Ventura County

Business Disposal
Fats, Oils, and Grease (FOG) are not accepted in any of the waste streams serviced by Athens. These materials cannot be processed at landfill, organics, or recycling centers. Inappropriate disposal may be flagged by the Department of Public Health. Foodservice establishments are required to contract with a 3rd party for the onsite collection of FOG. For more information on proper FOG disposal, businesses should contact their Department of Public Health.

Special Waste Collection
Large amounts of FOG cannot be placed in your containers. If a non-foodservice establishment collection is needed, email [email protected]
or call Athens’ Customer Service Department at 888-336-6100.

Never Pour Down the Drain

Do not pour used vegetable oil or cooking grease down your sink drain. Liquid oil can clog the drain and damage pipes in your home.
