Plastic produce baskets made from plastic #5 (PP) may be recyclable. 

Athens Services recycles plastics #1 PET bottles and clamshells#2 HDPE, and #5 PP.

To identify your products’ plastic type, look for the resin number inside the chasing arrows, usually located on the bottom of the item. The recycling symbol does not indicate if the product is recyclable or not.

Fiber-based produce baskets can also be placed in the recycling. 

Clean Your Produce Basket

If recycling, be sure to clean your produce basket. It should be free of any food residue.

Buy Loose Produce

Avoid unnecessary waste by opting for produce without packaging whenever possible. Bring your own cloth or mesh bags to the store or farmers’ market for loose produce.

Ways to Reuse

Return It to the Farmers’ Market

Some vendors at farmers’ markets accept used containers, and many will reuse their own containers. Check at your farmers’ market to see if you can bring your produce baskets back.

Repurpose the Container

Reuse your produce basket as a storage container for items around your home.
