Sponges

Trash

Place sponges in the trash.
When no longer usable, sponges should be placed in the trash.

Compostable options.
Athens does not accept most “compostable” sponges, as many options include “inorganic material” (like bioplastic) that is not permissible in our operations; the acceptable sponges are also difficult to identify when sorting. However, Athens will accept in their organics container luffa sponges (made from giant dried cucumbers). Luffa sponges cannot be soiled with anything other than dish soap and/or food.

Consider alternatives to plastic sponges.
Use washable cotton rags, opt for a luffa (giant dried cucumber), or look for sponges made from cellulose (wood pulp). These options are more environmentally friendly. Unlinke plastic sponges, these options do not shed microplastics into the water system.

Do Not Recycle

Generic sponges are made of plastic and are not recyclable.

Ways to Reduce

Use Natural Cloth Sponges Instead

Use reusable sponges made of natural fibers — such as cotton, linen, burlap and jute — that can be tossed in the wash with your laundry. Avoid sponges made from “plant fibers,” as this often means bioplastic.
