Straws

Trash

Straws that are made from plastic and/or bioplastic (plant-based plastic) need to be placed in the trash. Plastic straws labeled as compostable are not accepted in Athens organics containers.

Straws that are made from 100% paper, or plant fiber are allowed in Athens organics containers*.

*For those Athens communities, where food is accepted in the organics container, 100% paper or plant-based straws are allowed with green waste collection. If food is not allowed in your organics container, please place these items in the trash.

Choose Reusable
For food service establishments, Athens recommends implementing a “straws upon request” policy and offering reusable straws, where possible. If disposable straws are necessary, Athens recommends 100% paper or other plant-fiber based options, which are not individually wrapped in plastic. Plastic and bioplastic (plant-based plastic) straws will not be recycled or composted. Athens will also not accept paper or plant fiber based options that use a bioplastic coating to prevent degradation.

Make Stainless Steel Straws

If you want to get crafty, try making a set of stainless steel straws. Metal straws are safe and reusable, unlike paper or plastic straws.

Refuse the Straw

When you go out to a bar, restaurant or coffee shop, refuse the straw. When you place your order, tell your server right away that you don’t need one.

Donate Reusable Straws

Reusable straws can be donated just like any other reusable barware or tableware.

The Last Plastic Straw Movement

500 million straws are used and discarded on a daily basis in the United States alone. The Last Plastic Straw is working to address this rapidly growing problem. They ask people to request drinks without straws when they go out, and for cities and businesses to ban the use of plastic drinking straws completely.

The Walt Disney Company uses paper straws at some locations to protect their animals from ingesting any discarded plastic. Find out more.
